Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
