The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
