A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
